A FAMILY TRADITION

Our obsession with ice cream sandwiches started innocently enough when Asacia, our founder, was a child.

She and her mom used to make ice cream the old fashioned way: rolling a tin can filled with cream, sugar, and vanilla (that was surrounded by another can with rock salt and ice) back and forth until ice cream magic happened! This paired with homemade, fresh baked cookies would become a staple in her childhood and the cornerstone for her present day family-run business.

 

HOW THE COOKIE CRUMBLES

For almost three decades now, Asacia (still obsessed with ice cream sandwiches) has been happily sharing her ice cream sandwich tradition with all her friends. Then one day in early 2014 after being slyly coerced by her celiac friends, she decided to take the plunge and make everything gluten-free BUT make them so delicious that no one knew!

ANYONE CAN MAKE A GOOD COOKIE, BUT A GOOD GLUTEN-FREE COOKIE IS AN ART, SCIENCE AND CRAFT.

 

COUNTLESS HOURS WERE SPENT AND OVER 2000 BATCHES WERE BAKED TO PERFECT OUR COOKIE RECIPES. THE HARD WORK PAID OFF: OUR COOKIES ARE SOFT, CHEWY, AND DECADENT. MISSION COMPLETE.

ICE CREAM

Not to be overshadowed by our amazing cookies, our ice cream basks in its own light. To allow for more nuanced flavours and denser texture, we opt for a milk-based ice cream which relies on the richness of the ingredients as opposed to the fattiness of the cream to give it its wow factor. In keeping with our traditional roots, we mainly stick to the classics flavours. You won’t find any fads here.
The unique pairing of cookies and ice cream is where we shine.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Spring 2015, toting an ice cream sandwich that would make mom proud, we hit the streets. We found Innocent’s home and our first break in a GF church kitchen which we honour with grateful hearts and the halo in our logo. Summer was fast approaching! We jumped into production, bought our first tricycle, and cruised the Vancouver Seawall “pedaling” frozen joy all summer long. As one of Vancouver’s first companies to offer an ice cream sandwich and the only one to make them gluten-free, our first season was an epic success. Vancouver’s obsession with ice cream was well underway but its love affair with ice cream sandwiches was only just beginning.

YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE

In one short year, we had outgrown our tricycle. Weddings, festivals, film sets, pool parties, bat mitzvahs… the requests were flooding in and we only had three wheels! In 2016, “Sunshine”, our solar powered ice cream truck, joined the fleet. We set up shop at English Bay Beach and putted around town to every shindig we were invited to. The response was so overwhelmingly positive. Our hearts were filled with gratitude and by the end of the season we had our sights set on the future.

 

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

After two years “on the road”, we were ready for a place we could call home. A place our customers could call home. In early spring of 2017, we took over an existing coffee shop on Main Street in Vancouver and Asacia, her mom, sister, daughter, and boyfriend went to work transforming it into the most adorable ice cream sandwich shop ever! With Asacia at the helm, her daughter Hunter as store manager, Asacia’s mom as baker extraordinaire, and a team of Vancouver’s best scoopers we opened our doors on the first day of summer.

The years have flown by and every day we are thankful to be able to share our passion with you and for you to allow us to share in the sweetest moments in your lives. You commemorate the end of another school year at our shop with friends, you celebrate your community with our ice cream tricycle at your block party and you toast to the future with our ice cream truck at your wedding. We are humbled by your kinds words, your daily support, your wonderful reviews and your heartfelt recommendations to make our business better.

From its inception, we have striven to make Innocent Ice Cream accessible to all. After receiving feedback from our loyal customers we began our 2018 season by announcing that all of our cookies and waffle cones were 100% vegan (dairy-free/ egg-free) and we would have 6 rotating vegan ice creams/ sorbets in house every day. Needless to say, the response has been overwhelming. Keep the suggestions coming! We are listening (heart)
